It's been rained on a bit, and part of it is missing, but at one point this appears to have been a note of some sort, written in a very precise script. The remaining portion reads as follows:
"...considered himself to be 'Lord of Thieves', but was known among our people as merely 'Stealer of Chickens'. Stories abound regarding his nigh-endless feud with the McGoylesses in a prolonged battle of wits over Farmer McGoyless' chicken coup, or his den in the deep briars, filled with treasure. In later years the stories would grow to such magnitude that few if any would believe he ever existed, but in his day he would even occasionally visit the nearby town to barter such supplies as he could not gather or steal.
"One learned quickly to watch his expressions and guard one's possessions around him when he showed the slightest hint of avarice, and it was a long time after his eventual departure before any among our people trusted anyone even slightly resembling a fox.
"Only once he was gone did we slowly come to realize that he had been protecting us from the menace of..."
