Welcome to Nasmara!
On this page you will find all the information that your character will know as they move around the town, and a few quick things you as a player need to know about our OOC culture.
IC SECTION
The below facts are things that may be gathered by just looking around, but some require your character to have spoken to someone, even if it’s just Davian Songsteel, the NPC Tavernkeeper.
The first three marked in underline are ones that your character will absolutely be expected to know, else they incur deep suspicion (or heavy mocking).
Time Period:
Learned from: Innate
It is the early 15th century, including conservative dress conforming to gender roles, a lack of modern technology in favor of magical developments, highly limited medical care and literacy rates, and a large dependence on self-reliance. This means your character would know how to do chores and dress properly.
If your character is lower-class, they would likely be very well versed in several peasant skills, such as crop and livestock management, butchering, cooking, and saving up for the winter. They will likely be illiterate.
If your character is high-class, they would likely be well versed in genteel skill, such as horseback riding, music-playing, painting, falconry, and refined social negotiations. They will likely be literate.
If your character is a criminal be aware that consequences happen swiftly in a small town. If you want to RP a minor crook and know that your character will quickly be caught and punished, let us know! It could be fun!
If your character is feral, be aware that most villagers during this time period will likely wish to eat or kill a wild animal coming into town. You’re welcome to play one, but be mindful that it could go wrong!
Arrival Methods:
Learned from: Arrival, NPC Gossip, Observation
Your character may legally arrive one of two ways.
The most common method is the Enchantment - something like a magical net strung out over Kasuria that abruptly pulls people to the Island either because they are needed or because they need the Island. The teleportation is often nearly unnoticed; your character will be walking along a road and suddenly it is the road into town!
The second method is by one of the trade ships that arrive Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The experience would not be ‘comfortable’, it would be expensive, and as a player you may at some point contact the acting Trade Minister of the Island so that he may incorporate your character’s arrival into his plotline.
Unauthorized methods, such as self-teleportation, personal watercraft, flying or swimming begin with the flat out impossible and end with being extraordinarily dangerous and taxing. Using one of these methods will earn your character a highly negative response from the the those in charge.
Geography and Climate
Learned from: Observation, NPC gossip
The Island of Dandria’s rest is tropical. It does not get cold here, and it rains a lot.
While it often surprises us that we need to reiterate this, it is an island and therefore surrounded by ocean. There are no bridges to it and it takes several days of smooth sailing to get to the nearest western shore of Kasuria.
Island Layout
Learned from: Observation, NPC gossip
The parts of the dream represent, for the most part, the areas of the Island villagers are allowed to access. Claiming to have explored beyond what you can explore in the dream will earn your character a negative or incredulous response, unless they have earned special permissions through role-play.
There is the Town Square, with its three-tiered Trade Verandah. Most of the residents and shops are here, along with the Three-Star Tavern, the Children’s Home, and the guard house. Visible from Town Square is the floating oddity of a separated lawn hovering around the volcano to the north.
The southern road out of town passes by the beach apartments and approaches the Smithy, Glass Blower’s and Alchemical Laboratory, placed away from dwellings due to noise, smell, and danger. The docks are here at the beach as well.
The eastern road out of town terminates quickly and exits at a broad and glittering lake. The well worn paths through the jungle to the north are game trails used by the local huntsmen. Eventually it turns north to head toward a well kept Farmstead.
Your character would be frequently warned to never attempt to travel north of the Farm, where the Lords keeps their Diamond Mines, and especially to not try to travel north-west, for Here Be Dragons.
IC Laws:
Learned from: Reading the Posted Laws (tavern, guard door); NPC gossip
Enforced by civilian guards, ranking citizens, Fallenblade Colorguard, or most cruelly, the Island Defenses, the Laws of Nasmara are brief and easy to understand. While there are a few that are not posted, but nonetheless enforced, they are considered minor and will likely only earn a sound laughing-at by the guards. LINK TO LAWS
Who’s Who:
Learned from: NPC gossip
Overlord Spellcarver the Darkhand and his wife, Lady Tathar Darkhand née Maksa are the ruling couple of the Darkhand Kingdom.
The Fallenblade demons and Breathstealther clans - created races beholden specifically to Overlord Spellcarver, are seen in town and are understood to be presences obeyed, even if they are sometimes painted pink.
The Ruling Nobility, Lord Haku Loa, Lord Illiandi Bondsmiller, and Lord Project Ikarus, also live among the villagers to rule and counsel the populace.
Civil Servants such as Sir Vensyn of the Black Court would also be pointed out as being authorities.
Current Plots:
Learned from: Observation, NPC gossip, being personally affected
An ongoing plot in the dream is the perpetual over-population of domestic chickens, which can be seen absolutely everywhere. Another quirk of the dream is the occasional potato people sneaking about. Other plots come and go, and can be found [CURRENT PLOTS].
Island Defenses:
Learned from: NPC gossip, attempting to arrive in an unauthorized manner
Some of the island’s enchantments trigger automatically, sometimes before your character has even entered the dream! Two are of particular importance to a new character. The first prevents unauthorized or unannounced entry by sailing or flying; the second prevents unauthorized or unannounced approach by swimming.
OOC SECTION
We’re here to role-play, and most of our OOC Rules are centered around encouraging people to engage in roleplay, not trouble. Read the full list here!
Here are the main things you need to know right now:
If you’re in the dream, you’re expected to be available for roleplay with a description and the first three IC points known in the top section that are underlined.
We don’t allow OOC in the windows or snuck into commentary via posts.
You don’t need permission to join a scene, or even start one - just jump in, start posting, and enjoy the solidity of a strict continuity!
