BIZARRE FISH, brown and tan, with enormously flexible rainbow mouths, and a body a foot to two feet long , had been harassing the aquatic guards patrolling the island's reefs. Biting and face-covering with their enormous mouth-fringes, they were not seen as being a threat to the land-dwellers. And so the threat went ignored for far too long...
They were eating up all the fish closer to shore, and for weeks, no fish could be caught, no clothes could be washed in the lakewaters... They had followed the high-tide rivulets upstream and have been getting into the lakes as well. Sometimes even into puddles on the beach if it's been raining.
At long last the Lords took notice, when finally the water became so choked with these creatures that a black roll curled and bobbed along the beach shores, and the Atrox Ventus herself would not come in to dock.
By the time they had identified these animals, with the help of Samarillo Rupert, the news that they were the zealous harbingers of a sea-monster that could cause tidal waves came only a few scant minutes from the arrival of the beast itself!
With THE BEAST'S powers to push and pull the water, boil it around itself, and cause massive physical trauma with its terrible murder-sticks, the Mantis Shrimp's arrival into the Dandria's Rest bay was nothing short of disastrous. Two major stormsurges and one full tidalwave battered the shore, quickly separating the island defenders between those who had the magical items needed to survive the water itself, and those did not. The battle was fast and brutal, and while the Mantis Shrimp had spread its terror from dock to dock for years, the onslaught of men defending their home and neighbors tore it to pieces within a battle of a scant couple of hours.
Our heroes for the evening include Sir Vensyn Declain, and Mr. Valax for engaging the beast directly in combat, Miss Hannah Green for her invaluable breathing and swimming charms, as well as her exhaustive work to protect the swimmers from the boiling temperature, Mr. Sharleston and Lord Bondsmiller for their magical aids and bolstering of the defenders, the Project brothers, Mr. Sol and Lord Ikarus for their safeguarding of the citizens that answered the alarms, and Lord Loa along with a dog [Spiderwick], that aided in aerial extrication of fallen or weakened combatants. A nod of thanks is given to Mr. Samarillo Rupert and Mr. Steve Breathstealer [NPCs] for their information before the attack.
It is not without consequences.
A headcount the next morning revealed:
THE LOST AND WOUNDED
- Mr. Fenris Wolfshock, presumed aged 30, missing. Last seen near the Wolfshock home Wednesday the 13th. A poster of his rough likeness has been placed up outside the guardhouse, requesting residents and visitors alike to keep an eye out for him. Regular searches will be conducted. There is a reward for information that provides a lead.
- Miss. "Jilly" Jilliene, presumed aged 23, missing. Last known to be in her glassworks, now closed due to hazards within. A poster of her rough likeness, and has been placed up outside the guardhouse. For reasons unknown but to those in charge, in addition to the request for residents and visitors alike to keep an eye out for her, it also requests any information regarding sightings of green dragons. Regular searches will be conducted. There is a reward for information that provides a lead.
- The list of those wounded in combat and in the tidal wave will be found in the infirmary records, which will be updated as citizens come forward. Due to the highly contaminated nature of the water, it is ordered that even minor scrapes be reported to guard against infection and spread of disease.
[If your character is specifically listed and you would like to have them be found or re-integrate them, please contact administration. If your character is not mentioned, but was present on the island that evening 11/13 and missed the event, have a good story ready We can add them to the list of the wounded up until 11/21]
THE PROPERTY DAMAGE
Much of the beach has been pulled back into the bay. The loss of sand exposes the mass of tangly roots underneath the few trees that are supposed to BE on the beach, and those roots have acted as battering rams to any items that had been lifted from the shops and slammed against them. The dock seems to stand three feet taller than it used to and now sways terribly with the tides. The tidal wave has ripped out most of the undergrowth and most of the smaller trees between the beach and the guardhouse, with lessening damage on the way up.
The waters, foul and boiling, completely filled any ground-floor beach building, rose up to spill out of the windows of the second floors of these buildings, and pushed up high along the beach road's slope, damaging the bottom two to three inches of anything set on the floor of the bottom-floor beach apartments, with the exception of the center one that had long ago been sealed off with sandbags and a tarp. It will be at least a week before Mr. Manel Clubs, the blacksmith and a survivor of the surges, will have his forges back to a state where he can produce. Those working with softer goods will require longer.
[/li][li] 90% of items that were glass in the anywhere in the buildings Alchemy Shop, Leatherworks, Jeweler's Office, Blacksmith, and of course the Glassworks have been destroyed utterly, with any contents washed away to sea.
[/li][li] Due to the extremely contaminated nature of the dead-fish and potion-mingled waters, all cloth items, all uncured leather or hides, and all books in these areas have been ordered destroyed. Relief measures granted to affected individuals.
[/li][li] All foodstuff stored in these areas is either already gone or ordered destroyed, unless in entirely undamaged, fully sealed metal containers. Relief measures granted to affected individuals.
[/li][li] The water cistern affixed to the blacksmith is contaminated and unusable. For at least a week the water from the lake should be considered use-on-boil-only.
[/li][li] The all wooden doors and furniture in the areas completely submerged are likely to warp or rot. Several green slates have been ripped off the roofs of the beach buildings due to the higher waves.
[ Plots are introduced to generate RP between people, so please minimize off-screened cleanup until your character gets help with things. There's a lot to do and they would need a helpful hand rather than setting things to right immediately.]
[/list]
WAS...Was there at least LOOT??
[/li][li] Yes! But aside from the head being delivered to Hannah Green's Enchanted Emporium immediately the next morning, those in Authority seem to be keeping it quiet out of respect for the missing. Rewards to the heroes and helpers will be addressed on an in-person basis, but there are rumours about what was found in the belly of the beast...
[Only those characters who were actually present in the logs the evening of 11/13 and took a helpful role will be granted loot. Those who help with the cleanup on-screen, in RP, will be rewarded as well. All cooldown/lockout periods for all characters present on the island that evening have been reset. There will be smaller follow-up events as the island recovers from this disaster!]
