Dice for Various Uses
Probability Rolls:
These rolls are for determining how likely it was that something might happen!
Without Modifiers: [/b]
Just type roll 1d100. The number returned is the likelihood that your thing happened.
Illiandi attempts to walk through the woods without molestation by mashed potato tribesmen!
roll 1d100
Landi rolled a 1d100 and got 80.
So there’s an 80% chance that Landi goes home without seeing anything from the tribesman. Good odds! I can post a successfully going-home post from there, or I can follow it up with a happening roll.
With Modifiers:
These are used by advanced RPers. Sometimes it’s just unrealistic for a person to miss, or unlikely for a person to go unscathed. Let’s look at Landi going home again. You’ll notice that instead of ‘roll’ in lowercase, it is now “ROLL” in uppercase to show the modifier and how it was used.
Illiandi attempts to walk through the woods, burdened by his jute harvest. His steps are slow and he’s rustling many branches as he moves past them with the long stalks.
ROLL 1d100+20 encumbered
Landi rolls 1d100+20 encumbered: (80) = 100.
Yeaaaaah, he’s going to hear the lewd squelching any second now. 100% chance of mashed potato tribesman for Landi!
Alternatively, he could be highly alert, moving quickly and quietly and put a -20 modifier on that!
Rather than being used to give someone a power boost, this is more often used by a more skilled character offering a less skilled character (or player) a chance to get lucky.
Happening Rolls:
Used along or in conjunction with probability rolls, these are useful for determining what goes on in a scene!
Sometimes - you just don’t know what’s going to happen. In that case, you do a happening roll! Useful for things that have random effects or just to force a character into a line of action, you roll a die that has the number of sides appropriate to the choices.
So what should Illiandi do if he comes across the potato men? He’s just as likely to laugh as he is to fight or run! Well, with three options, you’d roll a three sided die.
roll 1d3 (laugh, fight, run)
Illiandi rolled a 1d3 and got 2
So, here he’d make a post about trying to stomp on their heads or whatnot.
These can also be used in conjunction with the probability rolls, to determine “hmm, if there’s an 80% chance that something WILL happen, there’s a %20 chance that it won’t!” Change the percentage into a fraction and you’re good to go.
roll 1d10 ( >2 is success!)
Landi rolled a 1d10 and got 2.
Awww, even though he had an 80% chance of making it out of the jungle, even though he did everything right, luck was still against him. You’ll see people using D20s for these as well, and ascribing difficulties based on their character knowledge
That’s how the dice roll sometimes.
Skill or Severity Rolls:
Similar to Happening Rolls, but are allow more leeway to determine how much success (or failure) an attempt had.[/b]
So your character got hit by something, and you’d like to see how bad the damage was. Traditionally rolled on a 1d20 (simply because this is a common RP die), a low number is considered ‘bad’ and a high number is considered ‘good’.
So here Landi has attempted to stomp on a mashed potato man’s head. It’s really squishy, so what damage did he actually do?
roll 1d20 (1 is a miss : 20 is the smushiest smush that ever smoshed.)
Landi rolls 1d20 & gets 20.
Ewwwwww! That got everywhere!
General Games
So your character has a few dice! ….What now? In a world where most of our players have grown up only having dice in conjuction with other games, it’s not unusual to not know what to play.
